ReplyThe meetings are open to fair members. A membership is $10, which also gets you a voting stake. As the editor of Patch I echo PDY's sentiment. This isn't a place to attack people or berate them for a job you suspect they've done poorly, especially if you're going to do so anonymously. To add, I'm an outsider to Durham and until I started covering the town I'd only been to the fair once. Is the fair what it once was? Maybe not. But it's still a fantastic fair with a tremendous amount of folks who work hard all year to make it happen. We can all do better.

ReplyKarin's right, it's easy to criticize anonymously. There are few, if any, who put in the time that Karin and Bob put in. I give both a lot of credit and the fair is in good hands under their watch. Just my opinion.

ReplyIt should also be pointed out that the test scores Ab Lew is referring to are not based on a fail or pass score. There are various levels such as proficient and goal. The state has a high standard and he's right, many students have not met that standard, but that is not to say they have failed. To that point, it is this writer's opinion that the BOE and administrators fully acknowledge the work needed to improve those areas and that's why they've decided to hire additional part-time tutors (without benefits) to help those students. Just more food for thought.

ReplyIt's revenue that does not come from taxpayers, to be perfectly clear.

You're correct, they did not address Mr. Gable's concern in that regard.
To your question, Mr. Renninghoff proposed eliminating "additional head count" including a 1.6 addition to special education support staff. Mrs. Adams said she thought it was the area the board would look for further reductions if the budget is rejected. -

Mr. Gable's comments were not included in the article mostly because they were focused on keeping health care costs down. The board addressed that issue by reducing the budget in that area by $113K. I thank you for raising the point here though. -

Students are also part of the equation. I scored an 960 on my SAT. At the time, I didn't think much about my future, finished with C average in high school but graduated college with a 3.75. Now Ab Lew you depend on me to tell you what's going on, right? So let's agree to disagree on some of the finer points and agree to both be there on April 10.
